What Shines Now (Online Worship)

Hi there. Thanks for spending part of your day here for our online worship gathering. This concept is simple. Start with #1 and go to #10. Bless you.

1. Pray for our homeless neighbors who are battling the cold.

2. If you don’t know what The Current is, please go here and come back.

3. We really value community, so now please go here and come back.

4. Now, prepare yourself to encounter God by doing these things: go outside, take a deep breath and pay attention to the sound of snow; come back inside; settle in a quiet place in your house (with candles and hot tea/coffee/hot chocolate); and finally, practice complete stillness and silence for as long as you want.

5. When your stillness/silence is finished, pray this:

Bright Morning Star,
your light has come,
and the birth of Jesus
has overwhelmed us with joy.
Like the magi of long ago,
may I(we) be drawn to you
and offer you such gifts as I(we) am(are) able. Amen.

6. Please read this:

You have searched me, Lord,
and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
you, Lord, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.

Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you. (Psalm 139: 1-12)

7. Watch this.

8. Read and reflect on this:

2 In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise menfrom the East came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising,and have come to pay him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet:

‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who is to shepherd my people Israel.’”

Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.” When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. 11 On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. (Matthew 2:1-12)

9. Here’s my reflection on that passage:

10. Finally, listen to this.

May you come alive in the light of our Lord Jesus today. Amen.

If you consider us your church, give as an act of thanksgiving here.

  1. Thanks for providing this opportunity to collectively worship…even when we are apart. This is the first time I have heard “Called Me Higher”…what a powerful song!

  2. “I could be safe, I could be safe here in your arms and never leave home, never let these walls down, but you have called me higher…you have called me deeper…”
