The design of 1 Peter, at least part of of it, is around household codes, what homes in a certain time and place look like. This means that, for the writer, living for Christ-like cultural patterns might start at home. The writer of this letter identifies popular cultural codes in his time, and then he imagines new Christ-like codes. It’s hard for us to see how radical the writer of 1 Peter truly is, but he was calling new Christians to live into God’s kingdom now with new household codes. Jesus and the legacy of the earliest Christians calls us to do the same thing in our culture. In other words, we, too, need to ask, what are the popular household codes of our time and culture? And what would new Christ-honoring household codes look like?
