We’ve all gotten the sense before that someone wasn’t listening to us. It’s frustrating. And when it’s something we really need to share, it hurts. Unfortunately, you can be sure we’ve all been bad listeners at one time or another. Bad listening not only hurts and offends others, but it might be that failing to listen turns our gifts into weapons.
This is definitely the case when it comes to evangelism, or storytelling, as we’ve called it. We’re all called and gifted to share God’s story. Jesus–his life, death and resurrection–make that clear. Yet when we don’t listen for the movement of God’s Spirit, and when we don’t listen actively to our neighbors, our call to evangelize becomes a weapon.
