Being a Christian is all about following. Even though following is not a popular practice in our culture, being a disciple of Jesus is a lifelong practice of growing as a follower of Jesus.
So what’s it mean to follow Jesus? Generally, it’s not business as usual. So what is Jesus’ business?
The answer to that might be in Mark 2:17: I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.
It’s from this statement that we get the title: “Jesus, Friend of Sinners.” It may be that we roll our eyes at that title–because we’re jaded and/or cynical. Still, if we want to get what it means to be a disciple of Jesus, we have to try to appreciate Jesus as the Friend of Sinners. We have to appreciate that Jesus’ business is to draw near to sinners to impart and teach righteousness to them.
