The Bible is often the source of some tension and frustration. We read it and find ourselves saying, There are contradictions (it seems)…God lacks compassion (in parts)…There’s so much violence…It’s hard to follow…
Ultimately, we say, I don’t get it.
Maybe that’s part of the problem: We’re determined to “get it.” Perhaps that’s not how the Bible works.
The writer of Hebrews says, “Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (4:12, NRSV). This writer suggests that the word of God gets us, not the other way around. This writer suggests the God’s word is a tool through which God cuts and speaks into our hearts (whether we get it or not).
