Many of us know the story of the rich man who comes to Jesus and asks, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
What we might have missed is that Jesus eventually looks deeply and carefully inside this guy. It’s a rare thing that Jesus does (as this verb, emblepo, in this form only occurs six other times in the New Testament).
We also might have missed that Jesus loves this guy after he looks deeply and carefully inside him.
THEN, he says, “You are lacking one thing. Go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor. Then you will have treasure in heaven. And come, follow me.”
Jesus sees the possibility of heavenly treasures on earth, and he sees it becoming a reality through this man. And through you and me.
