Do you know how the New Testament begins?
Jesus’ birth? His baptism? John the Baptist in the desert?
The answer…a genealogy. How exciting! Actually it is when you dig into it. It says everything about who Jesus is and what his coming to earth means.
Abraham is the first name listed (in Matthew’s genealogy). This name takes us way back to a promise God made in the very beginning of humankind’s history:
But me, my covenant is with you; you will be the ancestor of many nations. And because I have made you the ancestor of many nations, your name will no longer be Abram but Abraham. I will make you very fertile. I will produce nations from you, and kings will come from you (Genesis 17:4-6, CEB).
Jesus’ coming to earth means that this promise is being fulfilled. It is the promise that God is growing one worldwide family tree, and in King Jesus, we are all branches. Every single one of us.
