One brother stole a very special, particular blessing from his brother. That other brother then vowed to kill his brother. They become estranged for years until one decisive day.
Though it is a story with ancient, historical origins, the story of Jacob and Esau captures our current realities well. We live in an insecure world, a world where love seems scarce, relationships are conditional, blessing is limited, and curse is frequent.
What do we do in such world? Perhaps we have to first ask, what do we believe? Then, what do we do?
The story of Esau and Jacob says that we are, in reality, standing in God’s grace, in God’s warm acceptance and undeserved kindness. The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus makes that an absolute certainty. If we believe that, we must show that grace to brothers, sisters, strangers and enemies.
