A man in “gleaming, bright clothing” said to the women who came to the tomb of Jesus, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He isn’t here, but has been raised.Remember what he told you while he was still in Galilee, that the Human One must be handed over to sinners, be crucified, and on the third day rise again” (Luke 24:6b-7, CEB).
The Risen Jesus said to two downcast travelers who didn’t recognize him, “‘You foolish people! Your dull minds keep you from believing all that the prophets talked about. Wasn’t it necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and then enter into his glory?’ Then he interpreted for them the things written about himself in all the scriptures, starting with Moses and going through all the Prophets” (Luke 24:25b-27). In other words, the plan all along was for Jesus to come, die, and rise from the dead.
God’s plan all along has been to bring us back to life…back to living.
Jesus kicks that plan into full throttle. Jesus has gone ahead of us. To show us and teach us what it looks like to live according to God’s reality, God’s abundant life. To show us that he has conquered death and death-dealing cycles. To show us that we, too, are conquerors of death and death-dealing cycles in him.
